A Most Miraculous Birthday Present

Today’s Miracle Monday is a testimony of healing from the late Sister Carolyn Light.

In 1992, I went to my doctor to discuss hearing loss in my left ear. He looked disturbed and immediately referred me to an ear surgeon. The surgeon told me I would need immediate surgery.

I had a tumor in my left ear.

It was growing rapidly toward my brain and had already destroyed my eardrum. Due to its location, he would not do surgery and referred me to a second surgeon who took one look at my ear and said he would not attempt surgery!

My family and the saints went to God in prayer. Soon after, the doctor gave me the name of a physician who specialized in serious tumors. The specialist made no promises but agreed to surgery.

God was surely with me, and surgery was successful, but soon afterward I again lost my hearing. I was told that the muscle graft they’d used as an eardrum replacement healed ineffectively. I had the equivalent of an open wound in there.

I again asked for prayer. The surgeon tried eight treatments over the next seven months in an attempt to avoid repeat surgery. Nothing worked. By June 1993, he had given up and decided surgery was necessary. I was told to return in August. As August approached, I began to be less and less enthusiastic about the prospect of surgery and canceled my pre-op appointment. I just couldn’t do it. I did not reschedule. I just prayed.

Our August Region Conference rolled around, and on Saturday evening we returned to our home with our guests, Brother Joe Lovalvo and his daughter, Sister Fay. It was late, but we began to relate experiences and miracles. Before we knew it, midnight was approaching. There was unity of faith in the room. Stacey explained my problem and asked Brother Joe to anoint me while this spirit prevailed.

As he began to pray, two thoughts kept going through my mind. First was Mark 9:25, “Lord, I believe; help my unbelief.” Second was James 5, “Is any sick among you? Let him call for the elders of the Church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil… And the prayer of faith shall save the sick… and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him.”

My mind held this thought as I begged forgiveness of God, hoping to approach Him with a pure heart.

Although I can remember few of the words Brother Joe spoke, I could hear him better during the prayer! In fact, he was becoming too loud! When he stopped, I waited for someone else to speak, not knowing what to expect.

Soon they began talking, and Stacey was going to offer a prayer before we all retired. He stood on my left side, and I heard him from that ear.

I could hardly contain myself. In fact, I didn’t and began to sob. He looked at me and said, “You can hear, can’t you?” All I could do was nod.

Praises went up to God from four overjoyed people! I even went to the telephone just to listen to the dial tone with my left ear! That was right before I began to wake my family in Ohio with my good news! I noticed the clock was just a few minutes past midnight. I had been healed on August 21, my birthday! No one could ask for more.

The following month, I visited my physician. I said nothing prior to my examination. As he examined me, he began to sound positive, saying it “looked pretty good.” Finally, he looked puzzled and stated, “It’s healed.” I literally jumped off the examining table and told my story.

I could detect his skepticism, but he canceled the surgery! Although he looked perplexed, shook his head, and said little, on my record he wrote Patient healed,” and “That’s incredible.”

My nurse and the office staff were all rejoicing with me and offered me a copy of my patient record with those written comments, which I keep as a testimony to the best birthday gift I have ever received.

What’s the Purpose?

Some people believe that miracles stopped happening at some point after Jesus resurrected. The goal of Miracle Monday is to collect firsthand accounts of modern miracles that God has performed — and to share them with you. These stories remind us that God is alive and still performing miracles according to our faith. Do you have a personal story that you’d like to praise God for here? Send it here, and we’d love to share it in praise to God.
