Here’s the next installment of “Melodies with Meaning,” where our columnists tell you about some of their favorite spiritual songs. Today, we’re hearing from Sister Stefanie.

I’ll admit, I’m not a big music person. I opt to listen to podcasts or audiobooks when I work out or need sound on in my house or car. I like music, but it’s not my go-to.

However, during certain times in my life, God has touched my heart and comforted me through the words of a song.

In my sophomore year of college, I was really struggling with relationships — people who I thought were my friends, wanting to fit in…

I remember waking up earlier than my roommate and was exercising on the floor next to our bunk beds when her alarm went off. It was tuned to a Christian station, and a song was playing, and the words were exactly what I needed to hear at that moment.

Afterwards, I spent many hours searching for that song and could never find it. And now, I don’t even remember the way it went, but God knew I needed those words that morning.

There have been many other times where the Lord has comforted me through the words of a song, usually while in church. One hymn that the Lord has brought to my mind many times throughout the years — including right now, during this current pandemic — is “He’ll Take Care of Me” (No. 83 in The Songs of Zion).

As Christian believers, we know that God will take care of us through everything, and there’s no need to worry. And I’ve heard this song hundreds of times through the years, but it’s not until I really need to hear what the message is that it hits me like a sack of bricks and covers me with such comfort.

Here is the first and fourth verses and the chorus:

I don’t know the answers to the questions of the day,
I don’t know the reasons why when trouble comes my way;
But I know God in heaven knows, on Him I can rely,
For every time I question Him He gives the same reply.

That He’ll take care of me, so I am satisfied.
He said He’ll take care of me, so I am satisfied.
I am satisfied, He’ll take care of me.

News abroad of governments continual rise and fall,
Days of great pollutions hanging over one and all;
But I know God in heaven has my future in control,
And when He says I’m not to fear, what comfort to my soul.
