The Road Less Traveled By The Gospel Blog | Jun. 9, 2026
Recently, my husband and I, and our little dog, visited a beautiful arboretum. It happened to be a holiday, so the place was very busy. We came across two paths. One path had a lot of people gravitating towards it, and the other was wide open with no one taking it. My husband said, “Let’s take this one” (the road less traveled).
Well, needless to say, it didn’t take long to realize why hardly anyone was on this path. The terrain was not smooth. There were steps, and at one point, it led to a dead end. There was a lot more climbing than the other path, which was flat. What scripture comes to mind for the road that is less traveled? Matthew 7:13-14 resonated with me that day. “Enter ye in the strait gate: for wide is the gate and broad the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.” As my husband and I, and our dog, took the path that was less traveled, I can’t say I enjoyed all the climbing and maintaining my balance just to finish at a dead end. We pushed through and made it to the other path. Even our little dog kept up! In our spiritual lives, following the strait gate takes some work, but I love the part of scripture that says it leads to life, that is, eternal life. The wide-open path involves less work but leads to destruction. What are the equivalents of the hard work on the path we took? The Bumpy Terrain This takes the form of discouragement, worry, and lack of trust when things don’t go smoothly. Dead End When I have tried to take things into my own hands, I have reached a dead end, both naturally and spiritually. Keeping my eyes on the goal of eternal life is worth the effort it takes and opens doors that I never knew were possible. When faced with a crossroads in life, which path will you choose? Life or destruction? Wide or strait? Just as on this day, my husband, our little dog, and I were among the few who found the path, I am grateful we took it to see this analogy. The road less traveled is the way to go.
