One of the things I do at work is help companies unearth their why or purpose. It is my passion, and I love seeing this come to life. At the conclusion of this discovery, there are no two that are alike. Every single business is just a little different — even when they are in the same industry. This is important because each business needs to stay true to this “why” or purpose when branding and marketing. If it doesn’t, then, over time, it will begin to falter and ultimately fail. Fail meaning, working without clarity, motivation, passion and unity.

What about our spiritual why or purpose?

As a follower of Christ, is my purpose the same as all the other followers?

Didn’t Jesus Christ give us two commandments to love God and love others — isn’t that enough?

Or what about the commission Christ gave in Matthew 28, “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.” Aren’t these enough?

Yes, but…

Christ gave some very specific instructions for His followers, and, as individuals, we each have a very specific role to play.

1 Corinthians 12:27 says, “Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular.” That means we are one body, the body of Christ, but all separate or “in particular.”

We are one, but not one?

It doesn’t make sense, but it makes so much sense…

When we all play our specific role or “purpose” in the body of Christ, we can actually show Him to the world. This means that our different purposes should be celebrated, cultivated, and protected. We all must love God, love each other, and teach others to do so. Along with that, we owe it to His body to take the time and ask the Lord to help us understand our purpose. The best way to have unity is for every “member in particular” to understand his or her purpose.

Purpose provides clarity, motivation, passion and unity.

All the same does not.
