When I was in high school, I was on the cheerleading squad. Twenty-ish years ago, when I heard the word “squad,” that’s all I ever thought of. I don’t remember it being referred to as anything else.
Nowadays though, you see teenagers posting pictures of themselves and their friends on social media with captions like “squad goals” or “this is my squad.”
What does “squad goals” even mean?
When I look it up online, the internet says that it’s “used in reference to a person or thing seen as a model to aspire to or emulate, especially with one’s friends.” They are sharing people in their life that they look up to, or strive to be like.
I recently stumbled across a picture someone posted on social media of Jesus and some people following Him. It looks like a scene from a movie, and someone put the words, “Squad Goals” across the picture. I stopped what I was doing because this touched my heart.
You see, all these pictures online of people sharing their goals of friendships, and here, right in front of me, is the only “squad” I should aspire to be a part of!
Jesus’ Squad! He’s our example to look up to! He is full of grace, compassion, patience, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self control, kindness, and most of all, LOVE.
It’s wonderful having friends and family who we look up to and who inspire us. But, what are we really inspired by? Who has the best pictures? The brand-new car? The expensive clothing? The amazing career?
It can be so easy to get swept into the social-media-world of comparison, and we have to be so careful. None of that matters.
What matters is our heart and being on Jesus’ team, His sheep, His Squad.
“And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men. And they straightway left their nets, and followed him.” Matt 4:19-20
