Sunset Splendor: God’s Heavenly Handiwork

by | Apr 10, 2023 | The Light of Christ | 0 comments

On the west coast beaches of Florida, sunset is the main event of the evening. If you’re lucky enough to find yourself with a view, the canvas that God paints in that golden hour is breathtaking, and I never tire of watching the sky burst into the most brilliant oranges and fiery reds that accent the blue horizon.

Not only is the sunset magnificent to see at the beach, but I’ve also been amazed to see the sunset while flying by plane.

One experience took place while I was in college, back in the days when a student fare was about $50 cash for a standby seat. I boarded the plane, took a window seat, listened to the safety spiel, and closed my eyes. I began to pray, asking God for protection, and thanking Him for the opportunity to travel.

Once we took off, there was a moment when we were completely encompassed with clouds. The only sightline out the window was a thick blanket of white. Suddenly, we rose above the clouds to a heavenly sight: a brilliant sunset exploded above the clouds! As if I had never seen a sunset before, I took it all in. I felt the nearness of God in His magnificent creation, and I could see His glory all around me.

Immediately, the scripture that came to me was Psalm 103:1: “Bless the Lord, O my soul: and all that is within me, bless His holy name.” I just felt consumed with God’s love, and with all that is within me, I began praising my Savior for the splendor of His majestic creation.

In life, sometimes we can’t see beyond the clouds. But I encourage you to hold on, because the Lord can lift you higher and show you the extraordinary beauty He has for you.

“The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament showeth his handiwork.” (Psalm 19:1)
