When I was baptized at 14 years old, my dad gave me my own Faith and Doctrine book. My dad was never much of a writer; in fact, he always wrote in all capital letters when he did. (Haha.) It was a little joke we shared.

When it was my and my sister’s birthdays, my mom would write in our cards, and my dad would sign his name. So, when he gave me the Faith and Doctrine book and wrote something in it to me, it really meant a lot. It means a lot now, especially since he passed away 12 years ago this month.

I have run my fingers over the words that he wrote over and over throughout the years. His inscription was so simple but very powerful.

He said, in all capitals, of course, (Haha), “COLLEEN, READ THIS BOOK OVER AND OVER AND STAND ON THE TRUTH. LOVE, DAD.” The words, “STAND ON THE TRUTH” are underlined too.

It was powerful to read as a young teenager, but it’s even more so as an adult and not having him around anymore.

Stand on the truth.

We look around and see so many things unfolding in our world. There are more gray areas created each day. Things that are sinful to God are now becoming OK in society. What we know to be wrong is now being portrayed as right. It’s not. No matter what the world says, we know what God says.

“If it feels good, do it.”

“If it makes you happy, do it.”

That’s what the world wants us to do.

I heard a quote a while ago that I absolutely love. “Discernment isn’t just knowing right from wrong, but it’s knowing right from almost right.”

When areas become gray, we need to be teaching our children to depend on God’s Word. We ourselves need to depend on God’s Word. The discernment that we pray for our children and ourselves to have, it will help us when things go gray. We need to stand for what’s right! Put on the Armor of God daily, and…
