Good Word Friday theme: Freedom and liberty

Today’s verse reminds us that true freedom can only be found in Jesus Christ.

Freedom is an incredible gift. In the U.S., we enjoy many freedoms that people in other countries can only dream about. Yet, the freedom that Jesus offers is available to anyone — even people living in dictatorships, even people living in extreme poverty, even people living with disease, even people living in slavery right now.

When Jesus lived on earth, He kept distinguishing between the spiritual and the temporal. Spiritual freedom — from sin, from pride, from fear — is what liberates the soul. This kind of freedom can occur even if the body is in chains.

Living in a free country and enjoying liberty is a huge blessing that we shouldn’t take for granted. But let’s also place greater value on the freedom of spirit that only Jesus Christ can bestow.

If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed. (John 8:36)
