We live in a society that prizes free, independent choice above almost all other things. This impulse to be in charge of our own lives, to choose what we feel is best for us, to ultimately do what we want … it’s powerful.
Today’s verse reminds us that God understands this. In fact, He gave us free will. He gave us the power to make the most important choice that we can ever make in life — whether we accept or reject the gospel.
Accepting God’s ways means that we get even more liberty — freedom from sin and its eternal consequences. If we reject God’s ways, then we may think that we’re free — we don’t have to obey the commandments, after all — but in the end, what we’ve chosen is actually slavery to a lifestyle that will never satisfy us.
God knows what’s best for us, but He loves us enough to let us decide for ourselves.
