Growing up listening to the wise testimonies of my elder brothers and sisters, one that rings true and has always stayed with me is that of the late Sister Pauline Kowalczyk. Sister Pauline immigrated to the U.S. from Poland. Barely 5 feet tall, she frequently wore a long coat and was known for her fashionable hats. Most importantly, she gave a powerful testimony, greater than her stature.
Sister Pauline cherished her right to vote. After election cycles, she would boldly say in broken English, “Pray for the president!” I can hear her voice as I quote the words.
There is no greater time than the present to follow our sister’s godly advice. As the newly elected president, Donald Trump, will be inaugurated tomorrow, he definitely needs our prayers in leading the country.
As President Trump has expressed confidence in his role, I am reminded of Psalm 118:8 “It is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in man.”
As humans, we fail. Promises are made and broken. Placing our ultimate trust in the Lord is always best and allows us to rest assured that the Lord is in control and will deliver on His promises.
Many people vote for a political candidate with the hope that he or she will deliver the country from some issue, whether it be providing jobs, giving tax breaks, funding education, developing unity across party lines, etc. Although all these promises are made with good intent, they don’t always come through, and people are left carrying their burdens.
Another scripture that comes to mind is Matthew 11:28-30, “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”
Speaking from personal experience, I can truly say that at times of desperation, when I cast my burdens on my Lord and Savior, He truly lightens my load. He has provided jobs during times of unemployment and granted me peace through that time of uncertainty. I find rest within my soul, but only through God’s grace.
So let’s be reminded to place our confidence in the Lord and cast our burdens on Him because His promises are true. Hand in hand with this, let’s follow Sister Pauline’s wise advice, and pray for the president.
