Have you ever found yourself scrambling to put together a Sunday school lesson the night before you’re scheduled to teach? Many of us have been there. Did you know that the church has hundreds of lessons available for you to use whenever you need? Lessons for kids for teens for adults. Lessons for Sunday school, MBA, Ladies Circle, and even full-blown seminars. The Education Committee has been working hard behind the scenes since 1995 to support teachers around the church. Today, we’re going to tell you a little more about the committee and how YOU can use the lesson materials the next time you’ve got a class to teach. About 30 years ago, some members of the Church were wondering, “Is there anything the church can do to help the Sunday school and MBA teachers with lessons?” This question eventually led to the creation of the F.E.N.C.E. Program under the GMBA Activities Committee. Focus on our children In 2002, the F.E.N.C.E. Program changed its name to the Educational Curriculum Committee (ECC). The committee was tasked with developing a comprehensive, basic core curriculum of study, encompassing all aspects of the Church doctrine, history, organization, responsibilities, and scriptural beliefs. A K–12 curriculum chart was developed and lesson production began. In 2012, The Educational Curriculum Committee was renamed the Education Committee (EC), and it took on the mission to prepare and distribute lesson materials to enhance the spiritual, intellectual, emotional and physical growth of all learners and promote unity of belief among the people of the Church worldwide. Over the years, the Education Committee has overseen the production of lessons for preschool through adult students, a member’s guide, “Basic Belief” curriculum maps, and ministerial training modules, including instructional videos on the ordinances. Many members have contributed to the EC’s efforts, including the Spanish translation committee, videographers, and RIP System admins. In 2016, a desire to gather the lessons, seminars, study guides, and games that members created on their own and share them amongst ourselves led to the Lesson Sharing portal, a collection of well-composed lessons and other materials that teachers can peruse, download, and modify as needed. Thanks to the generosity of brothers and sisters willing to share their Powerpoints, Google Docs, and other lesson material, the repository has slowly grown. Today, the EC is moving forward with the hope that these educational resources will lay a foundation of faith that will lead many to believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God, who offers salvation to all mankind through obedience to His Gospel; and that the instruction may point them on the path to eternal life in the Kingdom of Heaven.
