Lessons from the Nursing Home: What Do You Identify With?

Since today is Election Day, I guess we no longer have to listen to the mud-slinging, empty-promise-making, and amazingly expensive ads for the candidates (well, at least until next time).

I believe it’s been a month since I wrote a blog, and if you have a way better memory than mine, you will remember that I introduced myself as a brother who works in a nursing home. As such, I have the opportunity to meet a lot of people who have already lived most of their lives, have had careers and families, traveled the world, or maybe never gone anywhere but stayed on the farm.

Usually the residents who I am walking with identify with something — being a soldier (may still wear the hat) or being a cowboy (may still wear the hat). Often, their family members purchase them gifts that follow the theme that the person identifies with. The photos in their room often follow that same theme. And, very often, they tend to find friends who have the same hats.

Our politicians likewise try to identify with the crowd they are talking to. If they’re delivering a speech to the Pennsylvania Coal Miners Association, for example, they talk about increasing wages, decreasing hazards, etc. (regardless of whether or not they actually care about the coal miners).

What do you identify with?

Are you a career woman? A businessman? A wrestler? What will be the theme on your nursing home walls? What would Hillary and Donald try to win you over with? Would they talk about the benefits of being associated with the Restoration? How they will make the fullness of the Gospel a priority when they’re in office? Would they open their meeting with you in prayer?

Or is something else the No. 1 priority in your life?

Mosiah 2:19 – And behold also, if I, whom ye call your king, who has spent his days in your service, and yet has been in the service of God, do merit any thanks from you, O how you ought to thank your heavenly King!
