Have you ever sat in church, singing a song that you’ve sung so many times that you’ve memorized all the words, and realized that you never really read them before? Today, for whatever reason, you actually read the words as you sing and let them sink in. That happened to me last Sunday with No. 65 in the Songs of Zion, “He Planted Me Deep.”

I’ve heard that song at least a hundred times in my life, and I know all the words, but I either never really let them sink in before, or maybe it was just my time to fully understand the depth of what the song is about.

With how busy the world makes me and how there are so many things to distract me, I can see how, without being planted deep, I can easily start missing regular church meetings. Even though I fully believe in every part of the message our church has to offer, I can see how it can become difficult to give up every Sunday morning and Wednesday night and other times during the week, if you’re fortunate enough to live close to a branch that meets together a lot.

Why? Because there are so many other things to do. It would be nice to have time to sleep in, hang out in your pajamas, or do whatever other people do. But those pleasures only last till they’re over. Growing godly roots is an investment that, over time, bears sweet fruit.

I’m thankful that God planted me deep so that I want to worship Him every Sunday, that no matter what comes my way, good or bad, I don’t forget that He’s the one I serve, that I turn to Him in any situation and He is always there.

Even though the idea of doing something adventurous outdoors on Saturday and Sunday sounds really great to me, I want to keep my eye on the prize and be His servant forever.

“When Jesus found me, He rooted, He ground me.

He planted me deep like a tall mountain tree.

He stopped all my going and leaving forever,

I’m bound by His Love I don’t want to be free.”
