God Clears the Road to Recovery

Today’s Miracle Monday is the life-changing testimony of Sister Debby Dye.

I found myself sitting alone and miserable in my bedroom. This had become the norm for me over the last few months.

I had moved back with my ex-husband after many conversations about reconciliation. After the first couple of weeks living there, I realized what a big mistake I had made. His promises were empty. All he wanted was a maid and someone to help finance his addiction, which ultimately turned into a relapse for me. Soon, we were always fighting. I was miserable and sick, both physically and at heart.

I’d put God on the back burner and forgotten how to pray.

I had been talking on the phone to my son, Jon, and he kept telling me about his new church, The Church of Jesus Christ (Erie, PA Branch). In fact, earlier in the year I had the opportunity to attend his baptism, and I can’t begin to tell you how proud this mom was! At the church service, I felt so loved, so welcomed, and so very special! From the minute I walked through the doors, I felt an overwhelming sense of belonging.

I wanted to come back, but transportation over the many miles was a big obstacle. So, I went back home to loneliness and heartache until that one day, while sitting on my bed crying, I got a phone call from Jon. I began pouring out my heart to him about everything I had done and the miserable path I had chosen.

He immediately asked me to come live with him! It wouldn’t be easy, as he only had a one-room studio, but he assured me that, with God’s help, it could work. And then he said, “You can come back to church, Mom!” My heart began to sing! Could this be possible? Would God help me again to get out of yet another mess in my life?

We hung up, and Jon made some phone calls and told me to pack my things. He and two of the ministry from his church were going to come and pick me up. They would be coming Saturday!

On Friday, it began to snow. The TV weatherman was calling for significant accumulation and whiteout conditions. Jon called and said they might not be able to make it Saturday if this kept up. My heart sank. I wanted and needed to get away from that lifestyle immediately. I sat down on my bed and began to pray.

“Dear Heavenly Father, I need you now more than ever. I know that I have made some horrible mistakes in my life and probably don’t deserve your love and help right now, but I know that your love is unconditional. I pray for forgiveness and for your help with the weather conditions so my son and his friends from the church can come and get me out of here. Amen.”

The next day, the snow was unrelenting. Jon was driving from Erie to Pittsburgh to pick me up. He said that it wasn’t snowing as bad there and that they were coming. I began to weep with joy! In less than an hour and a half they were knocking at my door. And I have not looked back.

As we headed for the highway, the snow stopped and there was blue sky above us! We had clear roads all the way to Erie. We later found out that all other areas around where I was staying had gotten 1 to 2 feet of snow. God had answered my prayers and also made sure the road to my recovery was clear.

I began attending church regularly. The first day I walked through the doors I felt that same feeling of love and belonging. I began to understand the depth of God’s love for me and that when you truly repent and ask for forgiveness it is given to you. In about two months, I was asking for my own baptism, and God continues to bless me every day. I am home at last!
