It may be hard to understand if you’re not an introvert like me, but I rest and recharge in silence. I need time away from social settings to revamp and regain my energy for the next round of responsibility. I feel pressure to wear busyness like a badge of honor and don’t often give myself permission to rest.

There was a period of time when my calendar was overbooked and my to-do list overloaded. Mind you, all worthy tasks to fulfill my duties as a full-time teacher, full-time mom, and full-time servant, but I was spent. I asked the Lord for help. “Please grant me more energy. More stamina. More strength to accomplish everything needful and necessary.”

I asked for more. He gave me less.

He gave me…a head cold.

I’m serious! I was asking for more attributes to be able to do all the things, and He decided that was not in my best interest. Instead, he wiped out the to-do list and put everything on pause by limiting me with fever and congestion. Do you know what I realized? 

I needed that. I needed that rest. That head cold was heaven sent!

For three days, everything quieted. People waited. Students managed. Sons accommodated. Husband supported. And the world continued to turn without me. I remember lying in bed—probably with a little smile—thanking God for how glorious this rest felt. Yes, I was sniffly and sneezy, but between the tissues, hot tea, and warm blankets, I was happy, oh so happy, that God answered my prayer in a way that He knew I needed most. 

After that restful season, I came back with gusto and took on the to-do list with joy. Tasks didn’t disappear, but I was able to carry on and sing my song of service again. 
Now, I’m clearly being playful here, so please don’t misinterpret the intent and start praying for illness to dodge your responsibilities, but do pray that God provides for all your needs, and trust that He may answer that prayer in a way that surprises you. I won’t be praying for additional head colds, but I will be asking for God to see me, know me, and show me what’s best so I can continue to be happy in His service. 

“And he said, My presence shall go with thee, and I will give thee rest.” (Exodus 33:14)
