Today, we’re putting a different spin on our Good Word theme of music and song. This psalm tells us that the earth itself — the natural world — makes a joyful noise to the Lord.
Musicians make music, yes, but this verse implies that God’s other creations are also designed to “praise” Him.
If you take a moment to think, you’ll probably be able to recollect many times when you’ve heard sounds in nature that are so lovely that they could be on par with a song.
- The roll and crash of waves
- Bird song in the early morning
- Tree leaves fluttering in the breeze
- The crunch of gravel beneath your feet
- The rhythmic drumming of a horse in gallop
- The snap and crack of a fire
You can easily add to this list. The earth itself praises God with these everyday hymns, and they witness to us that there is a Creator. Some songs are as soothing as rainfall, and others are as powerful as thunder; together, they point to God, the maker of all. Together, they paint a picture of His multifaceted character.
If you’re seeking something fresh for your playlist, try taking out those earbuds and tune yourself to those earthy sounds that are all too often drowned out. You may be surprised by how much you hear.
