Today, we’re continuing our Good Word theme of music and song. Today’s scripture describes how singing to God brings joy to the soul.
Have you ever experienced the opposite, though? You’ve listened to (worldly) music that brings you down, feeds your fears, ignites your lust, plays up cynicism, and puts you in a negative frame of mind?
This verse from Psalms isn’t talking about just any kind of music. You can’t just turn on the radio and rejoice. (Reality is often the reverse.)
This verse is talking about music that is directed toward God, glorifying Him for the greatest gift of all, redemption through His Son, Jesus. When we sing, we get the chance to meditate on the words and mood of the music, and what we sing sinks in.
So often, we get distracted by a catchy tune, but when we actually dwell on the lyrics, we realize that the song is, in essence, trash. And even though the music, in and of itself, evokes a positive feeling or gets our toes tapping, there isn’t that depth of joy we experience when we sing to glorify God.
What kind of songs are most on your heart these days? What are you letting sink in to your soul?
