My Lord Can Touch the Flowers That Fail to Bloom

One morning, while walking my dog in early May, I noticed a beautiful cactus. There are many cacti where I live. To be honest, I don’t pay too much attention to them, but this particular cactus had flowers blooming on the top, which caught my eye.  This is not usually a sight I see on my daily walks.

Fun Facts About Cacti:

  • Flowers only bloom for about a day.
  • Bees and birds help pollinate the cactus.
  • The cactus stores water.

Okay, so enough science facts, but to me this just proves God’s amazing ability to create something that doesn’t seem possible. It is very dry where I live, and there is not a lot of rain. Growing up on the East Coast, I always looked forward to seeing flowers bloom in the spring and literally spring from the ground. However, that season was preceded by lots of showers.

Recently, while singing, “My Lord Can”, from the Songs of Zion, I was reminded of this cactus. The song is about all the miracles God can do. The line that resonated with me was “My Lord can touch the flow’rs that fail to bloom.”

Like this cactus, the Lord can do what seems impossible as He reminds us in Luke 1:37, “For with God nothing shall be impossible.”

The Lord mentions this in many other scriptures, but in this verse, it is written in the context of how Elisabeth in her old age conceived and was carrying her son, John. Like the cactus, she had a long season of being barren, but the Lord performed a miracle.

What seems impossible for you today? Is it a

  • Prayer that hasn’t been answered yet?
  • Unresolved conflict with someone?
  • Overwhelming fear?
  • Ongoing trial or illness?

This beautiful song, “My Lord Can,” gives us so much reassurance that our Lord knows every detail of our struggles, or trials, and reminds us how He can pick us up to stand again.

Our Lord can make all things possible, just as He touched the cactus with beautiful flowers, He can fill the room with blossoms in your life.
