Today’s article is part of our summer series, “Be of Good Courage.”

Hi there! Allow me to introduce myself. I’m Courage. You may be very familiar with me, or we might only be acquaintances. Either way, it’s a pleasure to formally meet you.

The whole purpose of my existence is to persuade you to do something that may seem scary, painful, or downright unpleasant. My presence gives you the strength to get through even your toughest of trials.

I’m great to have around on your first day at a new school or new job. I’ll be there for you if you find yourself battling a long-term illness. I’ll help you along when thoughts of uncertainty fill your mind and the future looks dim.

Admittedly, I’m not always reliable. Sometimes you’ll try and summon me to take me with you on a journey that I’m not ready for. I’m hesitant to come along because my enemy, Fear, gets in the way.

Fear and I are complete opposites. While I want you to be brave and move forward, Fear will stop you in your tracks. He will tell you there is no hope and will always actively work against my best friend, Faith.

Faith and I go hand in hand. When Faith is around, I am at my best because having faith that God is in control gives you the strength to be courageous. There’s no need to worry about what the outcome might be because Faith reminds you that God’s got this. And I remind you of how strong you are when God is on your side.

And if Fear tries to creep, I’ll do my best to knock him out. He’s no match for me and Faith.

Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the Lord thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest. (Joshua 1:9)
