Good Word Friday theme: Seek

Worldly wealth. Fame and privilege. Status and power. Beauty and admiration. Oh, the vain things we seek! We know deep down that none of these will bring true happiness. Yet … what percentage of life is dedicated to worldly gain? What part is dedicated to spiritual gain?

Today’s verse says that the “vain things of this world” aren’t worth the seeking. It’s something that we need to remind ourselves of on a daily basis because the vain things of this world can be so irresistible and enticing.

The funny thing about “vain things,” though, is that they’re supposed to make life easier and happier, but when we put undue importance on them, they gradually become burdens that drag us down.

The best way to put those “vain things” into perspective is to hold them up to the light of eternity. This verse does just that. Our money, our titles, our accomplishments, or our mortal bodies — none of them can go to heaven with us. (We probably wouldn’t want them, anyway, once we get there.)

Matthew 6:33 says it beautifully, “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.” We can let go of “vain things” without any FOMO (fear of missing out) and go after “God’s things” instead.

“Seek not after riches nor the vain things of this world; for behold, you cannot carry them with you.” (Alma 39:14)
