Good Word Friday theme: Freedom and liberty

Today is the last verse that we’re bringing to you on the theme of freedom and liberty. Today’s psalm says that God “bringeth out those which are bound with chains.” In other words, He frees prisoners. Many of us reading this know firsthand the wonderful liberty that comes when the shackles of sin are removed — on the day of baptism and every day afterward when we repent of our trespasses.

The interesting thing about this verse (and the whole chapter) is that it describes what God does for those whom He frees. He doesn’t just free us and then say, “Bye! Good luck! Happy trails!” Instead, He says, “Come, be part of my family! Be my son. Be my daughter. Let me protect you.”

He sets the solitary in families.

He’s a father to the fatherless.

He’s an advocate for the widows.

God wants to draw everyone into His loving family. There’s room for everyone, even the deserted, even the weak, even the former prisoners. Praise His holy name!

God setteth the solitary in families: he bringeth out those which are bound with chains. (Psalm 68:6)
