Today, we’re introducing our final Good Word theme for 2019. This December, we’re sharing scriptures related to “Wonder.”

What is wonder? It’s “a feeling of surprise mingled with admiration, caused by something beautiful, unexpected, unfamiliar, or inexplicable,” as defined by Lexico.

The Christmas season is all about wonder, isn’t it? Sparkling lights. Magnificent trees. Gorgeous food. Spellbinding stories. Charming carols. Warm traditions. They’re all enchanting.

They’re enchanting, yet they’re merely the trappings of Christmas, the outward indicators of the season. We could have Christmas without them.

Psalm 72:18 says that it’s God alone who does marvelous things. Does this mean that there’s something wonderful about Christmas that goes deeper than tinsel?

The natural world points to God’s wondrous works — an undisturbed blanket of snow, a star’s path in the sky, a brand new baby. We marvel at these things. What of even greater wonders in the unseen realm?

God’s love for sinners. His mercy on the undeserving. The condescension of Jesus Christ, which we celebrate at this time of year. A good, true, pure, and beautiful gospel. These are all wonder-filled things that we celebrate in December, and we hope that these Good Word scriptures will help you see them for the wonders that they are.
