 If you are familiar with The Gospel Blog, then you may remember that I make my living working with kids with special needs, and this column is about the lessons that I have learned from those kids. (Actually, this one is about a sibling of one of those kids.)
One of the kids that I work with has a little brother—let’s just call him Davey. Davey is always excited to go walking with his brother and me. We spend most of our time working on walking up and down the neighborhood streets, and Davey likes to be outside. His mom started to allow him to go with us once he had become an effective enough walker to keep up with us, which is not much of a task, as we go very slooooooooow. The first few times we went outside with Davey—by the way, Davey was about 18 months old—he would follow along, but I found it interesting that if he was looking at something to his left, he would start to drift off to the left, and if he turned his head to look at something to the right, he would list to the right. Anytime he would see a car approaching, he would start to look at it, and, of course, start walking toward the vehicle as it would pass. As you can imagine, I did not like this particular situation, so I made him hold my hand. Once he had a hold of my hand, he would immediately start walking in a straight line, following me. No matter which way he looked, he would stay in a straight line as long as he held my hand. I think this concept works for everyone, not just little Davey. We get our eyes on the stuff around us, and then we find ourselves so tied up with debt or working like crazy to get that stuff—and we don’t have availability to give to the Lord or work for Him. Or, heaven forbid, we look at someone, and we get on a path toward an adulterous or unhealthy relationship. That’s not the path we wanted to be on, but we find ourselves there. I think if we work on getting a hold of Jesus’s hand, He will help correct our direction. While holding His hand, converse with Him about your relationships, your wants, and your needs. Even if you find yourself a little too far off of the path, get a hold of His hand, and He will help you get back on track. Bro P. P.S. Check out commandment No. 10 in Exodus 20:17.
