In the Beginning…
By The Gospel Blog | Jun. 16, 2026
“In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.” (Genesis 1:1)
There are times when we can read the word of God and wonder about a phrase or verse of scripture. The phrase “In the beginning” appears 22 times. Let’s take a look at two of these scriptures. The first is in Genesis, where everything that we know began. God, who always was and always will be, gave a start to everything we know. How long ago it was and how long the beginning lasted, we can debate for all time. Suffice it to say, everything had a start, even all of us. God created all that we know in six days, including dry land, light, the heavens, the moon, the sun, and human beings. In His creating, God saw and stated that these things were good. And when His creating was done, He said it was very good (Genesis 1:31). Lehi, speaking to his son Jacob, said about creation and man, “But behold, all things have been done in the wisdom of him who knoweth all things” (2 Nephi 2:24). In other words, God knew what He was doing. He created all that we see, and all that we know comes from all that we see. Job once challenged God, and God’s answer was, “Who is this that darkeneth counsel by words without knowledge?” No man knows the answers to all things, but our challenge is to learn what we can and use that understanding for the benefit of those we know and meet. What was the word? The word was the Lord Jesus Christ. John says, “And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth” (John 1:14). “Adam fell that men might be; and men are, that they might have joy.” (2 Nephi 2:25) God’s intent for us, from the beginning, was that we would be happy and that His creation would flourish. God wants us—you—to succeed. All that is here, especially His Son that He provided from the beginning, was prepared so we could live successful lives and serve Him to the best of our abilities. We will have challenges, and sometimes things do not go right, but He has made a way of conquering our fears, inabilities, and the weights that so easily beset us. “Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.” (Hebrews 12:2) In the beginning, God made a way for us to get to the end.
