Two Weeks Left
The Bible and Book of Mormon tell us we are going to live forever. This much we know, and we hold as truths. As Christians, we believe that we will live forever in Paradise with our Lord and Savior.
I have a friend whose brother has been sick for several years. He has a plethora of health conditions although he is in his 60s. He doesn’t have cancer, but he seems to have every other ailment possible. Last Friday, he was told that he has two weeks to live. It started me thinking about death and dying.
So, the question becomes this:
What if we were told we had two weeks left to live? What would we do with those two weeks? Would we quit our jobs? Would we love more and be more kind? Would we make sure our lives were clean and pure? Would we make amends with those that we should have made amends with many years ago? Maybe we would forgive others for an offense (maybe they don’t even know they offended us)? Would our walk with the Lord become even more precious?
So, now the question becomes this:
What if we were given two weeks to live, and that two weeks started 13 days ago? The Lord doesn’t promise tomorrow, and, in fact, tells us to be ready at any time. Matthew 10:13-22 tells a parable about a wealthy man who “had it made” by the world’s standards. Yet, that very night his life would be demanded of him. 1 Thessalonians 5:2 says, “For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night.”
I know a little bit about this firsthand, as my bride and love of this world, Sister Gina, lost her son, David, in a car accident at the age of 18. His two weeks started on March 28, and the end was on April 11. The accident remains a mystery to this day, and there were no alcohol or drugs involved. Why did it happen? We may never know. We do know that our Lord is sovereign and our Lord is also omnipotent. We also know that our Lord was not taken by surprise that David was called home that day.
Like Job, Sister Gina and I have now been blessed double, as we have 5-year-old twins! Like Job 1:21 says, “Naked came I out of my mother's womb, and naked shall I return thither: the LORD gave, and the LORD hath taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD.”
So, now the final question becomes this:
When will your two weeks to live start, and what will you do differently today?
