True Universal Health Care
Before I begin, I want you to know this is not a political blog post. With that said, unless you have been living under a rock (see, there I go again with the clichés) for the last few years or you just decided to not turn on a TV or read any type of news article, you know that the Affordable Care Act (a.k.a. Obamacare) was made law, and some of it started to go into effect on October 1.
This law will affect every single person in this country in some way, shape, or form from here on out as long as it is in effect. Just the other day, I received a letter from my health care provider, as many of you may have, stating that the plan I have now may not be offered next year.
There's a lot of fear and anxiety that comes with that. As a new father and husband of a wife who teaches (thus being around germs constantly), a good, quality health care plan is pretty important. I started to wonder what we would do if my plan was cut to something other than what we have now, which is really good and I constantly thank God for.
As I pondered, the Spirit reminded me that Jesus' healing is the answer. I thought about this, and a few days later, in my normal reading routine, I came to 3 Nephi 17. Jesus was about to leave the people when He said that His bowels were full of compassion for them, and He asked that they bring their sick before Him so He could heal them. Then, one by one, He did just that (3 Nephi 17:7-10).
Immediately, I went back to the thought from the other day. The Nephites had no access to doctors or medicine like we know them today, just to the Lord. While I know that God has provided doctors and medicines to help illness in the past (see Alma 46:40) and in our day and time, I also know that He has taken care of His people when there was no help and they relied on Him.
Whatever the future holds for our nation, I know that the only true and universal health care out there (which is free to all) cannot be provided by any government or state. It can only be found through faith on the Holy One of Israel, our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
