The Sun Is Always Shining
When I was young, a big priority in the United States was the quest to explore outer space. I am old enough to remember when men first walked on the moon. At the time, there was talk about eventually putting together an expedition to travel to Mars and perhaps even other planets at some point.
Around this time, I heard someone suggest that we should organize a trip to the sun. "How ridiculous," we said. You couldn't possibly come anywhere near the sun without burning up. But wait, this person had it all figured out — we can go there at night!
Why is this a silly statement? Well, any reasonably intelligent person would know that regardless of whether it's day or night, regardless of whether it's summer or winter, regardless of whether it's sunny or cloudy, the sun is always there, shining just as brightly! We may not have a clear view of the sun due to our position on Earth, but the sun is always shining, day after day after day.
God is the same way. There may be times in our lives when circumstances come between us and God. God is still in the same place — we just have to get past our own perspective to bring Him in view once again.
Discouragements may arise, and we may feel that God has abandoned us. No, He is still in the same place, waiting for us to lay our burdens at His feet or to learn the lesson He wants us to learn or to wait until the right time for our prayer to be answered.
Even at the darkest times of our lives, God is still on His throne, His glory shining brightly. Hopefully it helps to remember that if we can lift up our voice in prayer even in those dark times, God will hear that prayer and send us comfort when we need it most.
It's the enemy who tries to tell you that God isn't there when things are dark or when the clouds roll into your life. God is always there — it's up to us to seek Him out and stay close to Him.
No. 178 in the "Saints Hymnal" goes like this:
Back of the clouds, the sun is always shining;
After the storms, your skies will all be blue;
God has prepared a rosy-tinted lining;
Back of the clouds, it's waiting to shine thru.
