Summer Reading Challenge Discussion Forum — And a Prize Winner!

We officially have 50+ people participating in the Summer Reading Challenge! We're so pleased that you've signed up. (So pleased, in fact, that we have a little surprise for you at the end of this post.) We also suspect there may be more of you who are participating but haven't officially emailed to tell us.

Last year, we dedicated a space where readers could discuss the assigned scriptures. We've decided to dedicate this post for that purpose this year. It's not super fancy, but please consider this blog post your official spot for comments and discussion about the passages you're reading.

How do you discuss? Well, if you're reading this on email, it means you should click on the title of this blog post. That takes you to the Gospel Blog website, where you can leave a comment at the bottom of the post. Bookmark this page so you can come back to it whenever you have something to say.

Here are the "rules" of participating in this discussion:

1. Read the comments that people posted before you.

2. Say something thoughtful about what somebody else said, or respond to someone else's question.

3. Share your own thoughts, or ask a question that you have.

Here are a few questions to get you started. Respond to any of them anytime!

1. Is this your first time reading the Book of Mormon? Your first time reading it cover to cover?

2. How are you fitting in your reading each day? Do you have any tips to share?

3. What new thought, inspiration, or question has occurred to you so far?

4. Have you seen any changes in your life since you've started the challenge?

We want to reiterate that you can join the Summer Reading Challenge anytime before it ends in August. Just email us and let us know you're participating. Remember, we'll give away random prizes to participants at the end ... actually ...

We can't wait till the end! Maybe it's because we're so excited. Maybe it's because it's Friday the 13th.

We're going to give away a prize NOW to one participant who signed up!

We assigned all participants a number based on the order in which they emailed us, and we let Random.org pick a winner.

And the winner is...

[drumroll please]

Sister Vanessa Watson!

Sister Vanessa gets to choose one of these beautiful handmade scripture prints.

SRC Prize Collage 1

Remember, we may be giving out little prizes periodically throughout the Summer Reading Challenge, but the real rewards come along the journey.

To be eligible for future giveaways, please email us and let us know that you're participating. You can also download a printable schedule to keep you on track.

And last but not least, your weekend assignments:

Today: 2 Nephi 28-30

Saturday: 2 Nephi 31-33 (Congrats on making it through the first two books of Nephi!!)

Hi, Debbie, I'm just going through the Book of Mormn for my first time too! I find the simplicity and detail in the BOM scriptures really helps when you understand things in th Bible that you couldn't the first time.

Anyhow, I'm going to answe questions 2. I often have busy days and find myself in my car while waiting for someone/something. This is where I take out my BOM and read, it might not be much but it sure has added up! As for a tip, write side notes in your Bible and BOM for our understanding and reference! Also, you can use different highligherts for different themes. For example, use yellow for promises God has made, orange for a commandment or law etc

This is the first time I am reading the book cover to cover and I am finding it so interesting. In our MBA or during meetings we discuss certain chapters but we don't touch on everything in the book. There is so much information and blessings found here that if you don't read it in it's entirety, you are really missing out. I try to read first thing in the morning so I can feel the spirit all day!

There are a lot of stories that I've learned about in MBA and different classes since I was a kid, but there are a lot of details and other stories that I never even heard before that are super awesome! It's also cool to learn how all of the different stories that I did learn of before are related to each other. Honestly, the BOM is really exciting and interesting, like a good novel, but with a positive impact in my life. I've read ahead a bit and I must say, Captain Moroni is one of my favorite characters so far, along with Alma senior and Ammon. I recommend to anyone who hasn't started to just start reading it today!

When I mentioned to someone that I was doing the book of Mormon Challenge, they told me that it was too fast and that reading several chapters every day wouldn't allow time to actually study and digest the material. I decided to do it anyways.

As a result, I have been reading scripture consistently every-single day...something I hadn't been doing for years. It is amazing what a positive spiritual impact this has, even if you have to power through chapters and resort to speed-reading at times. God has been blessing me, regardless.

Don't let yourself make excuses! Just do it!

This is not my first time reading the BOM cover to cover but I do struggle sometimes to rrsd scriptures every day. So when I hard about the challenge, I decided to try it. My husband, who is not a member of the church, has taken the challenge with me. By reading a little bit every night (I usually read before I go to bed) I find that my sleep is more peaceful and I'm able to rise from my bed with little struggle in the morning. This something I will continue to do well after the challenge is over!

What a joy reading through the Book of Mormon. There are so many inspiring stories and individuals it's hard to choose a favorite. I'm currently in 3rd Nephi where It states that Jesus prayed and the words were so great and marvelous they could not be written or spoken by man. i wish I could have been there to hear them.
I'm also including a reply for my Mom, Ilene Coppa. At 90 she states, "I never grow tired of reading the word of God." Your challenge was truly accepted, She completed the Book of Mormon a couple of weeks ago! : ) You inspired her and she is well into the Old Testament looking to read through the Bible as well! She has been a wonderful example to me. Thank you for the challenge & God Bless.
