Spread the Good Word: 2 Nephi 9:29

Today, we're kicking off a new theme. For the next month, we're bringing you scriptures on the topic of "learning."

Education is a gift from God. And with great education comes great responsibility, whether your knowledge comes from the classroom or the classroom of life.

Sometimes, though, we learn things that are contrary to God's Word. Take a second and think of a few examples of things that the world teaches that go against what we read in scripture; it won't be difficult.

When we encounter a concept or a theory or even a fact that flies in the face of God's Word, what then?

From time to time, we fall into the trap of esteeming the worldly wisdom imparted by authorities more than we do the counsels of God — the ultimate authority.

Today's scripture sets the order straight. We should value learning — all stripes of it — as a gift from God. But we shouldn't place it higher than the wisdom that comes straight from God — His counsels in scripture, as well as the personal, individualized counsel He gives us through our relationship with Him.

Why do we even have a thirst for knowledge? Because we're made in the image of an all-knowing God, and we have an innate drive to emulate Him. But that drive competes with another — the drive to dethrone Him. As we increase in knowledge and learning, let's remember to keep it in its rightful place so that God can occupy His rightful place. When we do that, we can discover a deep and profound joy and fulfillment in learning.
