Spread the Good Word: 1 Samuel 15:22
Today's Good Word comes from a particularly memorable moment in the Old Testament where God tells Saul, the king of Israel, to do battle against the Amalekites and to utterly destroy them and all that they have.
Saul destroyed most everything and everyone — except the king and the best of the livestock. Saul figured it was a good idea to make an example of the king and sacrifice the animals to God.
Do you remember what Saul said when he returned from battle? In verse 13 he proclaimed, "I have performed the commandment of the Lord."
In his mind, he'd done what God had told him to do. Except that he didn't.
We can all learn a lesson from Saul's mistake. We're never going to be perfect, but we're often willing to bend God's commandments here and there to suit ourselves — our own motives, our own mindset. And, like Saul, we think we've done nothing wrong.
Let's remember that God is to be obeyed — end of discussion. That's the path that leads to the best outcome. Hopefully today's verse inspires us all to take a closer look at our walk with the Lord. We can all use a little nudge from time to time.
