Reassurance and Peace (When I Really Needed It)

Today's Miracle Monday, submitted by Sister Marilyn Scolaro, is especially for those of us who need a little extra reassurance that God is in control.

October 7, 1990, Greensburg, Pennsylvania, the Howard Johnson motel. Yes, my husband and I were attending General Church Conference. Our 17-year-old son, Christopher, was home in Michigan and working at McDonald’s, his first job. It was also the first time he was left alone for the weekend. I told him to call me at the motel (no cell phones then) when he got home from work no matter what time it was, so I would not worry.

Well, at 2:30 a.m. I woke up realizing he had not called me yet. Concerned, I called him at the house from the landline in the motel, but I got no answer. I kept calling till finally he answered. He said he had to work very late, and when he got home a strange car was parked the wrong way in front of our house with no one in it. This was very unusual in our neighborhood.

I was concerned for him since he was all alone, so I called the police to check it out. I then tried to calm down. I said a prayer for him, but my anxiety was so overwhelming, knowing he was alone. I was not calming down. I needed to be assured that God would take care of him, but I was not trusting Him.

After much tossing and turning I prayed again to God that He would give me a sign that I would feel this assurance. I said, “Lord, I do not know what time it is, but I am going to pick a specific time, and if that is the exact time on the clock, then I will know that you have heard my prayer and you will take care of everything.”

Now this was very hard to do since I had no idea of the time. I kept tossing numbers around and finally the time 3:46 a.m. (this was a digital clock) came very strong to me. I looked over at the clock, and you know what time it was ... 3:46.

Immediately, I felt peace and assurance and knelt down and thanked God for answering my prayer. While I was praying, I realized that song number 346 in our green Saints Hymnal is "Blessed Assurance."

God truly gave me BLESSED ASSURANCE that worrisome night, and every time I hear or sing this song I am reminded of God’s goodness. May you enjoy that blessed assurance as you click on the player below and hear my granddaughter, Sister Grace Gibson, sing a verse for you.
