Preparing for the Storm

Today, instead of a typical Miracle Monday, we're bringing you a scripture study sent to us by Sister Lori Kimmel. We hope you enjoy it, whether you apply the scriptures personally or you use this as the basis for a church class or group discussion.

The topic, "Preparing for the Storm," will seem very practical to you if you live in an area that's periodically threatened by any type of natural disaster.

This study takes a real-life scenario and gives it a spiritual application. The remainder of the article is in Sister Lori's words.

Being a native Floridian, hurricane season is a way of life. Every May (or June), we start gathering our supplies. One year in Ladies' Circle, we studied briefly about "Preparing for the Storm." I thought that maybe those who read the blog would like to study along too. I believe we all need help with our personal storms — are we ready?

1. Food and Water

"And it came to pass that he brake bread again and blessed it, and gave to the disciples to eat. And when they had eaten he commanded them that they should break bread, and give unto the multitude. And when they had given unto the multitude he also gave them wine to drink, and commanded them that they should give unto the multitude. Now, there had been no bread, neither wine, brought by the disciples, neither by the multitude; But he truly gave unto them bread to eat, and also wine to drink.

And he said unto them: He that eateth this bread eateth of my body to his soul; and he that drinketh of this wine drinketh of my blood to his soul; and his soul shall never hunger nor thirst, but shall be filled." (3 Nephi 20:3-8)

  • Luke 12:22-31
  • 1 Corinthians 11:23-29
  • John 7:37
  • John 4:6-14

2. Flashlights, Lanterns, and Candles

"Verily, verily, I say unto you, I give unto you to be the light of this people. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hid. Behold, do men light a candle and put it under a bushel? Nay, but on a candlestick, and it giveth light to all that are in the house; Therefore let your light so shine before this people, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father who is in heaven." (3 Nephi 12:14-16)

  • Ether 4:12
  • Mark 4:21-23
  • Luke 8:16-18
  • Matthew 5:14-16

5. Evacuation Plan (Way to Safety)

"And it came to pass that I beheld that the rod of iron, which my father had seen, was the word of God, which led to the fountain of living waters, or to the tree of life; which waters are a representation of the love of God; and I also beheld that the tree of life was a representation of the love of God." 6. Remove Any Potential Damage-Causers

(3 Nephi 30:2)

  • 2 Nephi 1:23

7. Secure the House (Your Personal Foundation)

And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it. (Matthew 7:24-27)
