Ponder Them in Your Heart: Christmas Playlist 2018

I can’t say it is easy to narrow down a Christmas song that inspires me during the Christmas season. Yet, the song that pricks my heart every time is “Mary Did You Know.” Perhaps it is because Mary has always intrigued me. As scriptures reveal, she was very special and chosen by God to bear His Son, Jesus. The lyrics of this song pose many questions to Mary that portray the life of Christ, such as miracles of healing, walking on water, calming the storm, etc.

I believe that Mary knew Christ was no ordinary child, and she took her calling very seriously. Like most mothers, she loved and nurtured her child and watched him grow. The scripture points out two occasions where she pondered things in her heart. The first mention of this is in Luke 2:19. This scripture depicts the manger scene and the amazement of all witnesses. Verse 19 says, “But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart.”

The second scenario that supports Mary’s belief that Christ was remarkable is in Luke 2:46 when Jesus grew a little older and was found in the temple sitting in the midst of the doctors and asking questions. In verse 51, it says, “his mother kept all these sayings in her heart.”

When the Angel Gabriel first began to explain to Mary that she would be used to bear the Son of God, she was a bit alarmed and confused. In reading the discourse, she accepts the will of God. I believe that Mary did know that she was used to deliver an extraordinary child, but she may not have understood the magnitude of His power until she saw His actions unfold. My favorite lyric in the song is the one that asks, "Did you know the child you delivered will soon deliver you?"

I love how Mary pondered and kept these sayings in her heart. As a mom, my children have often said things to me that have caused deep reflection. Sometimes their perspective is just the clarity I need. Of course, their actions are on a totally different level, but the wonderment that comes with being the mother of children, watching them grow and apply spiritual wisdom is definitely something to ponder. If you are a mom, you may know what I mean.

As we celebrate the Christmas season, may we meditate upon our Savior’s birth and join Mary in pondering the sayings and miracles of Christ in our heart.
