My Calling as an Apostle
Let me begin by saying that I am truly humbled and honored to have been called and ordained as an Apostle of The Church of Jesus Christ. If you were able to attend yesterday’s Sunday service at the General Church Conference, then you heard me relate three dreams that I was blessed with that confirmed for me my calling as an Apostle. I believe it was no coincidence that “Dreams” was selected as the Miracle Monday theme for this month of April, so I am going to share my three dreams in today’s blog, especially for the benefit of those who were unable to attend the Conference.
Dream 1 (2003)
In this dream of 15 years ago, I believe the Lord was just letting me know that this calling was in my future.
I dreamt that we were in a conference setting. The Apostles were standing in a circle, discussing something. For those of us standing outside the circle, we somehow knew that the Apostles were discussing how they were going to fill an existing opening in the Quorum of Twelve. I was standing near the circle. Apostle Paul Palmieri then turned from the circle and pointed at me and said, “OK, you.”
Dream 2 (2016)
I dreamt that I was in an office building. The building seemed to represent The Church. The Apostles had large offices, and other church members had smaller offices, while others were working at desks. I walked by a desk, and Apostle Jim Crudup was sitting at the desk. The desk was in an open area, the type of office space normally given to a lower-level employee. I asked Brother Jim why he was sitting here instead of in an office. He said, “They’re still finishing up my office upstairs.” He then looked around to see if anyone was listening and then said to me, “Your office is going to be right next to mine.”
Dream 3 (May 22, 2017)
I dreamt that I was having a conversation with Apostle Paul Benyola. This occurred during the time that Brother Paul was ill and confined to his home. Although he had been ill for a long time by this point, he looked healthy in my dream — just the way I remembered him prior to his illness. In the dream, Brother Paul told me that I was going to be the next Apostle and that all of the brothers in the Quorum of Twelve were in favor of calling me as an Apostle. I asked him when this was going to happen and he said, “I’m not sure.”
When I awoke, my thought was that Brother Paul was telling me that I was going to take his place in the Quorum when he passed away. That’s why he wasn’t sure of the exact time when it would happen. Since we were still praying for his recovery at the time, I just mentally filed this away as a future event.
Two days later, we were saddened by the news of Brother Paul’s passing. Even as I was reacting to this sad news, the weight of my dream from 48 hours earlier descended upon me as I realized that the time had arrived for me to become a member of the Quorum of Twelve Apostles. Sure enough, at the next General Church Conference, I was interviewed by the Apostles, and they unanimously agreed that the Lord was calling me to this office.
I’m so thankful for these dreams as a confirmation of this calling. They give me confidence that the Lord will be working through me as I serve as an Apostle of The Church of Jesus Christ. I solicit your prayers, not only for myself but for all of the Apostles.
