More Happy Than Sad

“I am okay. I have more happy than I do sad.”
– Anonymous 6-year-old

Sometimes I think kids have a better understanding of life than we do as adults. As we get older, we let life experiences and other’s opinions get in the way, but the truth is, we should always have more happy than sad. We’re blessed with the understanding that our God has offered us eternal life. What could make us happier?

This, of course, does not discount the sadness we all feel from time to time. The world we live in can offer a lot of pain and misery. Because of this, Jesus gave us these comforting words, “In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33, emphasis mine) In other words, “You’re going to go through trials in this life, but don’t worry! I’m greater, and I’ve got this.” That verse gives me all the feels.

Coming off of Thanksgiving and Christmas, it is easy for most of us to think of all the happy that outweighs the sad in our lives. We’ve just spent time with family and friends and reflected on all we are thankful for. Does that feeling of happiness and gratitude carry on once January hits? Or do we revert back to focusing more on the sad than the happy?

We have so much to celebrate! Not just around the holidays, but every day of the year. Let’s strive to have the mindset of that 6-year-old and remind ourselves that even on our worst day, we’re okay; we have more happy than sad.

Understanding that God loves me makes me happy.
