Meeting My Mate
Today's marriage-related Miracle Monday is from Sister Gelsa Staley. Many times, when we think of getting married, we think of young people, but this testimony shows how God can provide a mate at any stage in life.
In my late 40s, I found myself a single woman living alone and very lonely. My consistent prayer to God was "If you want me to remarry, then place a man of God in my life, or give me the strength to be alone."
One day, I received an email from a friend, and it told the story of a woman who was divorced and had to take care of her mother. The woman knew she was better off alone so she could devote herself to her mother's care. Her mother died, and, at the wake, a man went into the wrong viewing room, and they struck up a conversation. That simple encounter led to a relationship and their eventual marriage.
I felt that I was given that story to bring me comfort and to know that I first had to care for my aging mother before I could have a man in my life. I did just that, and my mother lived with me for several years before she died in December 2007.
In February 2008, I started to communicate with a brother in The Church, and we met in person in April. I'm sure you can guess how this story ends. We married in 2009 and just celebrated our fifth anniversary.
But the story does not end there.
My mother was preceded in death by two of her sons. The man I married had two brothers and a mother still living. So the good Lord saw fit to provide me not only with another mother but two brothers as well.
Still, the story does not end and gets even better. My husband could not have children. I have two sons and four grandchildren. He became a father and a grandfather the day we married. God is so good. He blessed both our lives with just what we needed.
It may seem odd, but the theme for November is "death." Dealing with death is one of the hardest things we experience, and the Lord often gives us something special to help us cope with the grief of loss. If you feel comfortable opening your heart, please share your story with us.
