Jesus, Our Superhero!

In reflecting upon this past year’s teaching for our children in the Mesa Branch, AZ, I was reminded of our Vacation Bible School theme, which taught the kids about when Jesus was a kid. It was a powerful theme connecting some basic Bible points, such as Jesus

  • Had a Family
  • Had a Name
  • Went to Church

Many of the adults, including myself, played the role of various shopkeepers, and the kids paid a token to come to our "shop" and learn about events, customs, and daily life in Nazareth. We pretended that we didn’t know Jesus, and we asked the kids the question, “Who is Jesus, and why is everyone talking about Him?”

Most of the kids went along with my question, and they gave me answers like Jesus is God’s Son and so forth. However, my favorite answer was from Max Dyer, who said, “Jesus is the superhero for all of us.”

Well, that says it all.

Recently, I taught the older kids in Jr. Church about the “omnis” of God. God is

  • Omnipotent
  • Omnipresent
  • Omniscient

In Max’s schemata, the superheroes all exhibit the “omnis." They have some type of supernatural power. They are always there in the nick of time, and they seem to know what is going to happen and how to solve a problem.

More importantly, Max connected these superhero character traits with Jesus. He is our superhero in fighting good vs. evil. He is all-powerful and knows what we ask before we even ask Him, and He knows the best possible solution to deliver us.

The following scripture sums up Max’s definition: “What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us?” (Romans 8:31).

Let’s reflect on Max’s answer when we are in need of God’s power in our lives, or when we are faced with a battle or struggle with good vs. evil. Jesus truly is the superhero for all of us.
