How Do You Sing?

Today's article is another installment in Brother P.'s column, "Lessons From the Nursing Home."

If you have a memory better than mine, then you may remember that I work in a nursing home. The nursing home has a way of bringing the Christians in the community through its doors.

We often have various churches performing services, singers singing, players playing (piano, guitar, flute, etc.) and we even have a couple Christian schools bring in students to do activities with the residents. (Our branch has even gone a few times for Christmas caroling). Sometimes the visitors are talented … sometimes not so talented. But no matter; the residents love the attention.

One time, I got to hear a small group sing “My Hope Is Built;” however, they sang it way, way, way different than we do.

It sounded a little like this: On Christ (long pause) the sol (long pause) id rock (long pause) I stand (long pause). All oth (long pause) er ground…

I think you get the picture. At least part of the picture…

I must mention that I really did not like the way that they sang that hymn … But I must admit that I loved the way that they sang that hymn. Let me explain.

That small group of singers, well, they sang. I mean, they really SANG with every bit of their collective being they sang. WOW, they sang!

In our branch, there are times when we sing, survive the song, and go on, and then there are times when we come together as a branch and we put our souls into praising God.

How do you sing? Do you wait for your favorite song to sing? Do you not sing when someone calls a song that you don’t particularly know or care to sing?

Or do you see through this veil of flesh and see the angels singing with you? Do you see the smile on the face of Jesus as you worship Him? Give Him your praise!

Thank you for this reminder of how important it is to praise the Lord with our whole heart. Just this past Sunday, I sat in front of someone who wasn't hitting the notes, but I "loved" hearing him sing.

We had an Easter Singspiration the Friday before Easter and invited the closest branches to ours. Our branch had practiced and practiced wanting it to be the best we could be. As we sang that night, I was so impressed with how we sounded and wondered if that was what it would be like in Heaven. The other branch came prepared as well with instruments and beautiful voices. I was so very touched by the night so I totally understand what you are saying about praising the Lord with our whole heart.
