Faith of a Child

"And they brought young children to Him, that He should touch them: and His disciples rebuked those that brought them. But when Jesus saw it, He was much displeased, and said unto them, Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God. Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child, he shall not enter therein." (Mark 10:13-15)

The above verses, though short, give us so much in terms of what Jesus was trying to teach when He was on Earth. The final remark says it all, that we must become as little children in order to enter into His kingdom. Basically, we need to love like them, rely upon our Heavenly Father like they rely on their parents, and have faith like them.

I have been made a very proud father as I have witnessed the faith my son has in the power of prayer. He’ll be 6 in mid-July, and he’s seen the power of God in his young life multiple times, and he is quick to ask me to pray with him or for him.

I wrote in the past about how, during a storm, I explained that Jesus calmed the wind on the Sea of Galilee, and when we prayed for the thunder to stop, it did, and my son could go to sleep. Then, during Hurricane Harvey, when the water was coming up our yard and we thought we might flood, we prayed, and the Lord stopped the creek from rising even though it was still raining.

In recent months, I’ve seen him exercise his faith multiple times when it comes to anointing, and what a joy it has brought to my heart! A few days after I was ordained, he got a small cut that started to bleed. He started to panic — he hates the sight of blood — so I asked him if he wanted me to pray for him, and he said yes. I took out my oil, placed a drop on his head, and prayed. Within a few minutes, it stopped, and I told him it was because of his faith.

He was sick with strep throat not long after, and he asked me to anoint him again. The next morning, he was his high-energy, back-to-normal self. Just a few weeks ago, he fell and again asked, “Can you pray and use your oil?” and the next morning he felt just like new. He’s even told Mommy she should have me anoint her, since she’s been suffering from multiple migraines each week for the past six months.

His faith is unwavering, and now he wants me to read more of his Bible stories to him at bedtime versus Star Wars or other books. What a wonderful example our children set for us sometimes, and how God speaks to us through them!

When we as adults start to worry about the things of this life — work, school, finances, marital strife, sickness, the craziness that is the world we live in — all we need to do is look at our kids. They provide the perfect example of what we need to be like to enter the kingdom of Heaven: loving, caring, faithful, and reliant on our Father.
