A Victorious Visit

Thirty-three years ago, almost to the day, I, Nephi, wrote to you about the wonderful events that occurred to mark the birth of our Savior Jesus Christ. Today I'm here to tell you about an even greater event.

Almost 40 years ago, Samuel prophesied the events to mark His birth and also the signs of His death. Not long after, our society grew so corrupt and evil that the government was destroyed, and that second set of signs came to pass.

Four days into the new year, the 34th since the sign of His birth, the storm of all storms hit. Words cannot express what the sky looked like. Not only did we have horrible weather, but there were earthquakes as never before and fires everywhere. Mountains were literally destroyed, and new ones were created. Many areas fell into the sea and are now covered with water. The whole landscape changed.

This destruction lasted for three hours, and then probably the worst thing of all occurred. Darkness for three straight days. This wasn't like an overcast night in the wilderness, away from the light of the city. This was darkness that you could literally feel on your skin. Many tried to make fires but couldn't. It was so dark you couldn't see your hand in front of your face. What made it worse was the crying and wailing of the people. There was so much death and destruction.

But then, after the third day, something wonderful happened.

We heard a voice from Heaven. He explained that destruction had come to many due to their iniquities, but that He was Jesus Christ, the one who had been prophesied about. He had come to save us from our sins if we would repent and offer to Him a broken heart and contrite spirit.

After the speaking ended, there was silence for several hours, and then a voice from Heaven spoke again. After this one, though, the people began to weep and howl again for the loss of their family and friends. But as the third day ended, the darkness dispersed and the people began to have joy that their lives had been spared, and they began to praise Christ.

As many gathered at the temple in Bountiful, we heard a voice from Heaven again. This time it said, "Behold my Beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased, in whom I have glorified my name - hear ye Him." As we looked up, we saw a Man descend out of Heaven in a white robe.

It was JESUS! He had us approach Him to touch His hands, feet, and side. We praised Him, and He taught us. He called 11 others and myself to be the leaders of the people. He taught us as he taught those in Jerusalem, told us that we were the "other sheep" and what would happen in the latter days, healed our sick and blessed our little ones, and taught us about communion. This was all on the first day!

Much to our chagrin, He had to leave us for a short time. The next morning, the 11 and I began to teach the people, and we were baptized. As the Holy Ghost fell upon us, Jesus came again. He prayed with us and the multitude, and he then miraculously produced bread and wine so that we might have communion again with Him.

He prophesied more about the future and what it held for His covenant people. He taught us for three days, and I'm sure He will come back again often. While I can tell you what happened, words cannot express the joy that is in my heart. I'm so thankful that I'm alive to witness and see my Lord and Savior standing here in front of me in the flesh. Praise God!
