A Miraculous Escape

Today is our last week of Miscellaneous Miracles, and we are sharing the testimony of Sister Lydia Link. Next month we're asking that you submit military testimonies. Please click here to share your story. (We haven't received any so far!)

Miracles are not only things of the past, but are with us today. Before I relate the miracle we experienced, it is necessary for me to describe the layout of the location in which it took place.

The Bronx, New York Mission is a one-story building. You first walk into a vestibule that leads into the sanctuary. Behind the sanctuary are the all-purpose room, a small office, and a kitchen. In order to access the back rooms from the sanctuary, you open a door, go a few feet through a hallway, and open another door. The rooms behind the sanctuary are heated with a natural gas space heater.

One Sunday this winter, Brother Jim and Sister Alice Suska arrived at the church, and as Brother Jim customarily does, he made certain that the all-purpose room space heater was lit. He also put the tea kettle on the kitchen stove and lit the burner. Then it was time for Brother Jim to leave the church to pick up a sister and her family for the meeting.

It was still early, and the only ones in the building were Brother Jim Link, Sister Alice, and myself. We were conversing in the meeting room, when suddenly, Sister Alice jumped up saying that she smelled gas, and she immediately thought of the tea kettle. She raced through the back room doors and instantly the smell of gas started to fill the sanctuary. She rushed into the kitchen having to cover her mouth and nose from the strong smell of gas and saw that water from the tea kettle had spit out and extinguished the flame of the stove burner.

The kitchen, all-purpose room and office reeked with the smell of gas. Sister Alice quickly turned off the gas on the stove and opened the door to the back exit. Then she plugged in the electric box fan to help exhaust the fumes. Throughout this ordeal, the thought of turning off the space heater never occurred to anyone until hours later. It was at that time we fully realized the marvelous workings of the Lord.

If God had not been there to protect us, we would not be here, and The Church building would be a pile of ashes. We praise God from whom all blessings flow that He is still on His throne and that He watches over His people.
