Holy Hurricanes

Holy Hurricanes

When I chose "hurricanes" as my topic for this series, I had no idea what I could really say. So I started doing some research, watching videos of recent hurricanes and the damage that they've left behind.

Although watching the actual storm was a little awe-inspiring because of how amazingly frightening they are, what I found most interesting was the destruction after the storm.

Keep Calm and Be a Mollusk

Keep Calm and Be a Mollusk

When I was little, I spent hours combing the sand to pick out the tiniest seashells I could find. My collection grew, and I've since used them in Pinterest-inspired crafts or decorative vases.

They're pretty, sure, but I don't often think that an empty, open clam or mussel shell (one that looks like a butterfly) was once the outer, protective layer of a tiny, otherwise helpless animal. By the time a seashell gets into our hands, it has already served the great purpose of protecting a clam for its lifetime.

Summer Series: Beach Week! | Traveling Like a Sea Turtle

We have a special treat for you! To celebrate summer, we've dedicated this week to beach-themed posts that explore how the physical world — waves, sand, palms, and more — reflect our relationship with God (Job 12:7-10). Beach Week was inspired by Sister Vicki's article from a few weeks back. So, sit back, relax, and enjoy! Today's post is a rewrite of an article that a few of our bloggers liked and forwarded to us.

Do you remember that Disney movie "Finding Nemo"? Remember when the uptight clownfish, Marlin, meets the laid-back sea turtle named Crush? Marlin is surprised by the amount of freedom that Crush gives his little boy, Squirt, allowing him to roam around the ocean and make new friends.

Last year, we dedicated a space where readers could discuss the assigned scriptures. We've decided to dedicate this post for that purpose this year. It's not super fancy, but please consider this blog post your official spot for comments and discussion about the passages you're reading.

One day, an angel named Gabriel came to me and told me that I was favored by God and that I would be the mother of the son of God. I thought, Me, the mother of God's son? That's a huge responsibility!

Shuff, shuff, shuff...

The steady rhythm of my planer slicing delicate shavings from the soft wood pauses at the sound of chirping insects. Glancing up, I notice my workbench gathering a pale orange tinge from the setting sun. Dusk. A cool breeze and dimming sky signal my permission to close shop for the day.

I couldn't believe it. Had it all really just happened? I knew when I got old enough to tend the sheep that it would entail long nights and sleeplessness. I just didn't think that my mind would play these kinds of tricks on me.

I'd been hearing rumors that a big announcement was about to come out and that a very special messenger was going to get the assignment, but when I received word that my Heavenly Father wanted to see me, I had no idea that I would play such an important role.

My young caretaker came into the barn more nervous than usual this morning, and he didn't attach me to the cart that carried wood. Instead, he placed a few blankets on my back, straightening out the wrinkles.

I used to dream. Years ago, when I was a tree, my dream was that my wood would be used to build a beautiful treasure chest. I could just envision myself ornately decorated and holding precious treasures.

So there I was, tending to the dozens of guests at my inn late one night, milling about doing my usual routine. "Need another pillow? Want something else to eat?" I'd ask my visitors.

Christmas Character Series: Creative Writing and Artwork by You!

Today we're kicking off a special series for Christmas! We've recruited a team of creative writers to bring you the Christmas story from the perspective of the individuals who lived it. Each participating writer has chosen a character involved in the nativity and imagined how that character may have experienced the Christmas story. They have each written the story from that character's perspective.
