Kids' Question of the Month – July

Kids' Question of the Month – July

If there’s one parent-ism I’ve said to our kids a zillion times, it’s this: “You might not agree or understand this now, but someday you will.”

It’s different than “Because I’m the mom (or dad) and I said so,” although that’s been heard in our home too. Less dismissive and authoritarian, the first statement stems from a parent realizing (usually after intense bargaining) that no amount of explanation will satisfy the child and the awareness that he/she is not developmentally ready to fully grasp the gravity behind your decision or action. Born out of great love, it implies the child needs to trust you enough to accept what they do not like or understand at the moment.

Kids' Question of the Month – June

You may notice we say "brother and sister" 'round here
It's because we're a family and these folks are so near
When one has a heart ache, we all shed a tear
And rejoice in each victory in this family so dear

I'm so glad I'm a part of the family of God
I've been washed in the fountain cleansed by his blood
Joint heirs with Jesus as we travel this sod
For I'm part of a family — the family of God!

Announcing the 2015 Summer Reading Challenge!

It's back again for the third year running — the Summer Reading Challenge.

In 2013, we read the entire Bible in three months. In 2014, we tackled the Book of Mormon. This year, we're doing a 60-day deep dive into the four gospels.

We're starting this Monday, June 8, and we'll wrap up on August 6. We hope the leisurely pace gives you the time to really savor these beautiful scriptures. We've even built in a handful of catch-up days so that you can get back on track if you fall behind.

Kids' Question of the Month – May

For May, in celebration of mothers, we asked kids, "Why do you think God created mothers?"

Sister Jessie, the teacher in Herndon, VA, sent a very insightful response from Abigail, age 4, who was visiting from Monongahela, PA one Sunday: "God made Mommy so she can run away and then I can call for her."

Kids' Question of the Month – April (with Video!)

When our children were little, my husband and I were invincible to them. There wasn't anything we couldn't do. Intricate hair braiding, face painting, pumpkin carving, advanced train track configurations, lemonade stand and Lego kit building are just a few skills on our parenting résumé. We felt confident in our abilities to keep them safe and warm, bellies full, kissing away fears and boo-boos.

Until that day. The day when one of them scraped a knee or something and I swooped in puckered up and ready,
only to be bluntly told, "Thanks Mommy, but your kisses don't work. I need a band-aid, please!"

Ka-pow! I'd been dethroned and replaced by a SpongeBob band-aid.

Kids' Question of the Month – March

Kids' Question of the Month – March

Our sincere apologies to all the kids, teachers and parents who participated in the Kids' Question of the Month! We're resending this email because — for some reason — only a tiny part of the article got published this morning. Enjoy the MANY responses and adorable pictures!

March Question: If you could go back in a time machine, what event in the scripture would you like to see with your own eyes? Why?

Elizabeth T. (Age 10, Edison NJ) would crank the machine all the way back because she would "like to see the Creation to see what the world looked like at that time"

Animal lovers abounded in our respondents. Haley S. (Age 6) and Evan G. (Age 5) from Imperial, PA as well as Abigail G. (Age 4) and Emma N. (Age 5) from Monongahela, PA want to see Noah and all the animals on the ark. Elijah K. (Age 4, Monongahela, PA) is especially thankful that Noah "saved the lions and I wish Jesus would have saved Dinosaurs on the ark too."

From the Mouths of Babes

From the Mouths of Babes

"And Jesus saith unto them, Yea; have ye never read, Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings thou hast perfected praise?" (Matthew 21:16)

Children are very animated and expressive about things they love. They also have very literal interpretations of the world around them and say things that are just plain funny to adults. When our kids were little, I would share funny things they said with friends and family. One friend always told me, "You need to write these down!" I did not heed her advice often enough, and some of those comedic childhood conversations have slipped from memory.
