A Long-awaited Answered Prayer

Today we're bringing you another gratitude-themed Miracle Monday from Sister Lynette Huttenberger.

On November 16, 2014, a miracle happened in our family for which I will be forever thankful to God. It also happened because of you, the saints of The Church of Jesus Christ who prayed. Webster defines "thankful" as expressing gratitude and relief. I want to express my gratitude to you and relief.

My daughter, Michelle Watson, and her husband, Michael, called to see if they could stop by our home prior to church that Sunday morning. It was a region conference meeting, and we were a bit puzzled by the request. Immediately, I thought, "It must be bad news."

Spread the Good Word: Ether 6:9

Today's Good Word is also today's Dare to Share verse. Take a few moments to share this with someone who may be going through a time of "night" or darkness, or hardship. Praising the Lord is a great thing to do when you think you have nothing to be thankful for.

Is It the End of the World as We Know It?

Is It the End of the World as We Know It?

2 Nephi 4:34"O Lord, I have trusted in thee, and I will trust in thee forever. I will not put my trust in the arm of flesh; for I know that cursed is he that putteth his trust in the arm of flesh. Yea, cursed is he that putteth his trust in man or maketh flesh his arm."

2 Nephi 28:31"Cursed is he that putteth his trust in man, or maketh flesh his arm, or shall hearken unto the precepts of men, save their precepts shall be given by the power of the Holy Ghost."

Jeremiah 17:5-8"Thus saith the LORD; Cursed be the man that trusteth in man, and maketh flesh his arm, and whose heart departeth from the LORD. For he shall be like the heath in the desert, and shall not see when good cometh; but shall inhabit the parched places in the wilderness, in a salt land and not inhabited. Blessed is the man that trusteth in the LORD, and whose hope the LORD is. For he shall be as a tree planted by the waters, and that spreadeth out her roots by the river, and shall not see when heat cometh, but her leaf shall be green; and shall not be careful in the year of drought, neither shall cease from yielding fruit."

The Day of the Lord (2 Nephi 23)

The Day of the Lord (2 Nephi 23)

2 Nephi 23 gives some detail on a future period of time referred to as the “Day of the Lord,” a time of vast destruction that will precede the establishment of Zion. There are many scriptural references to the Day of the Lord, both in Isaiah and 2 Nephi as well as in the writings of other prophets. Verses that include the phrase “in that day” generally are referring to the Day of the Lord.

On the one hand, this is not a time to look forward to:

"Howl ye, for the day of the Lord is at hand; it shall come as a destruction from the Almighty." (2 Nephi 23:6)

What Are You Holding on To?

What Are You Holding on To?

Over the summer, I along with another sister took the opportunity to visit with a dear sister who was very ill and has since gone home to be with the Lord. In preparation, I went to a nearby farmer's market where they sell fresh cut field flowers that are very prettily arranged in a mason jar.

As many women reading this already know, putting anything in a mason jar makes it special, and knowing I had a ton of jars at home, I picked out the brightest, prettiest blooms to take to her.

Once home, I went to my kitchen and pulled out a nice jar that had a handle, one that could also be used for drinking. I arranged and cut the flowers to look like what I had seen, and it turned out perfect. Plus, the handle made it easy to pick up and move.

The Courage to Change

The Courage to Change

Today, we're bringing you another thankful-themed Miracle Monday. This one is from Sister Edna Calabrese.

One of my very first experiences with the Lord was at age 15. I had many struggles, as most 15-year-olds do, and I had tested my parents to the point that they did not know what to do with me. I was angry most of the time.

I was in a gang of girls, and we bullied and partied; we owned the town of McKees Rocks, PA, at least we thought we did. I was confused and in over my head.

Throughout the month of November, our Good Word will also be our Dare to Share verse of the day. Why not use today's graphic to remind someone that you're thankful for them and that you're praying for them? We can all use that reminder from our brothers and sisters from time to time.

Politics, Liberty, and Our Lord

Politics, Liberty, and Our Lord

Politics can be a touchy subject. When I worked in Pittsburgh, I sometimes focused on public policy and had interactions with local politicians. At the mere mention of the name of a local policymaker, I could set loose on a rant about anything concerning his/her affiliation, political agenda, or even personal character. Looking back, it was slightly ridiculous.

Notice where we are at today — two days removed from a national election that has been building over the last 17 months. Over the course of this time, we have seen many social issues arise that have been at the forefront of speeches, debates, and other propaganda. Technology has enabled us to see these issues every moment of every day, even as they are occurring. It’s been an environment we have been submerged in for more than a year, and now we await the implementation of the result in January.

Sing Unto the Lord (2 Nephi 22)

Sing Unto the Lord (2 Nephi 22)

In the brief chapter of 2 Nephi 22, the prophet encourages us to “Sing unto the Lord: for he hath done excellent things” (verse 5). Singing to the Lord is a large part of our worship of God. We have quite a diversity of hymns available to us, enough to express almost anything we might want to say regarding our relationship with God.

To illustrate this diversity, I gathered the titles of about 70 of our hymns and fashioned them into something that sounds a lot like my personal testimony. Here it is:

Lessons from the Nursing Home: What Do You Identify With?

Lessons from the Nursing Home: What Do You Identify With?

Since today is Election Day, I guess we no longer have to listen to the mud-slinging, empty-promise-making, and amazingly expensive ads for the candidates (well, at least until next time).

I believe it's been a month since I wrote a blog, and if you have a way better memory than mine, you will remember that I introduced myself as a brother who works in a nursing home. As such, I have the opportunity to meet a lot of people who have already lived most of their lives, have had careers and families, traveled the world, or maybe never gone anywhere but stayed on the farm.

Prayers, Hand in Hand

Prayers, Hand in Hand

Today, we're bringing you the first of our thankful-themed Miracle Mondays. Here, Sister Suzanne Beeman shares a testimony in honor of Sister Doreen Perri. Enjoy!

Anyone who has met Brother Rob or me has heard us gush about our miracle son, Jordan Beeman. Jordan was my fifth pregnancy and our only child.

My entire pregnancy was blessed due to God’s grace, the laying on of hands, and the prayers of the saints. The goal for the pregnancy was to reach 24 weeks. There were three episodes where I thought I miscarried … again. Another blessing was that Jordan’s kidney condition was diagnosed prior to birth, which I have no doubt saved him from suffering and, worse, losing a kidney.

Fruitful Women: Gentleness in the Story of Moses

What do the following have in common?

  • Gentleness
  • Pharoah’s daughter
  • Jochebed
  • Miriam
  • Adoption

Read on to learn how today’s fruit of the spirit, gentleness, relates to the topics outlined above.

According to Baker’s Evangelical Dictionary of Biblical Theology, gentleness is defined as “sensitivity of disposition and kindness of behavior founded on strength and prompted by love.”

The Lamb & the Lion (2 Nephi 21)

The Lamb & the Lion (2 Nephi 21)

The image of the lamb and the lion lying down together is a familiar one, typically representing “peace on earth.” Many Christian groups use this image, and many organizations have “Lamb & Lion” as part of their name. This phrase is based on the prophecy in Isaiah 11, which is reproduced in 2 Nephi 21:

"The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid, and the calf and the young lion and fatling together, and a little child shall lead them. And the cow and the bear shall feed; their young one shall lie down together; and the lion shall eat straw like the ox." (2 Nephi 21:6-7)

Setting a Strong Example

Setting a Strong Example

One of my favorite chapters in scripture is Proverbs 31, that of the virtuous woman. Since I was a teenager, I've had a desire to be similar to that woman Solomon talks about.

Each verse in the chapter lists task after task that the virtuous woman does, from taking care of her children and husband to helping out the poor and those in need, not to mention making and selling fine linens, speaking with wisdom and kindness, and having strength and honor for her clothing.
