Spoiler Alert! (1 Nephi 12)

Spoiler Alert! (1 Nephi 12)

Spoiler Alert! Annalise was shot by Wes.
Spoiler Alert! CeCe is "A."
Spoiler Alert! Glenn wasn't the one attacked by the zombies.

If you're a fan of any of the TV shows associated with the above, you'll recognize these tidbits of information that would have spoiled the ending of a segment of the show had they been revealed to you prior to arriving at that particular ending. When these bits of information are included in articles that appear online especially, they are generally preceded with the warning of "Spoiler Alert!" so that you know that if you continue reading, you may read something that will give away the ending.

A "Spoiler Alert!" should be issued in 1 Nephi 12 as the ending of The Book of Mormon is revealed to Nephi (and thus to you).

Two Words You Never Hear Together

Two Words You Never Hear Together

When was the last time you saw a billboard, magazine ad, pop-up, or commercial that told you to "deny yourself"?

Never?

OK, well, how about TV personalities, celebrities, government officials, policy-makers, professors, and other intellectuals? Who is saying, "Deny yourself"?

… crickets …

We live in a society where the media tells us, "Indulge yourself," and voices from the podium declare, "Affirm yourself."

Yet, 2,000+ years ago, Jesus Christ told His disciples and followers, "Deny yourselves."

Kids' Question of the Month – January 2016

Kids' Question of the Month – January 2016

"I'm starting with the man in the mirror
I'm asking him to change his ways
And no message could have been any clearer
If you want to make the world a better place
Take a look at yourself, and then make a change"
"Man in the Mirror" (1988)

Kids are keen observers of the world around them. This month we asked, "What changes would you like to see in the world in 2016? And how do you think you could help make it happen?"

The Love of God (1 Nephi 11)

The Love of God (1 Nephi 11)

If you've ever read or learned about Lehi's dream, then you probably know that the tree in the dream represents "The Love of God" as Nephi is told in 1 Nephi 11:22. However, if you read the description of what Nephi is shown as the meaning of the tree, you'll see that he is shown the virgin Mary giving birth to Jesus (verses 15-20) as well as the Lord Himself going forth among the people (verse 24). Putting these together, we see that the love of God has been demonstrated to mankind by Jesus coming into the world and making a way for each of us to inherit eternal life in the kingdom of God.

Jesus Himself said the same thing: "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life" (John 3:16).

Memories ... How They Linger ...

Memories ... How They Linger ...

The brain is a powerful organ — and some may argue the most powerful of all. It reminds us not to touch the hot stove and to look both ways when we cross the street. It’s responsible for our range of emotions and our plethora of thoughts. It’s a pretty big deal.

Our brain, for better or worse, holds hundreds of thousands of memories inside of it. It remembers the time you broke your arm and the time your grandma gave you the best birthday present ever. It remembers the date of your baptism and when you met the love of your life.

And, if you’re a human like me, your brain remembers some not-so-great memories, too.

Long Lost

Long Lost

Today's Miracle Monday is a testimony from Christmastime written by Sister Linda Scolaro.

It was Christmas Eve, and my husband and I were busy dividing and conquering, running errands, doing last-minute grocery shopping and spending a lot of time cooking for our Christmas dinner.

First, my husband misplaced his wedding band and college ring. He calmly said, “It will turn up.” At the end of the evening, I emptied my pockets, and my wedding band was gone as well. I slept uneasily, but I resolved that I would look for the ring after all of our Christmas festivities were over.

Spread the Good Word: 2 Cor. 5:7 {Plus Video!}

If you're at a fork in the road today, let 2 Corinthians 5:7 guide your steps.

We've also got a great video to share with you today of the Pacific Region Youth Retreat. Enjoy watching these young people pray, fellowship, and discover what God's word has to say regarding important topics that they themselves identified as relevant — the priesthood authority, the sanctity of marriage, and the Book of Mormon — and then present what they learned from an afternoon of seminars led by the region evangelists.

My Restoration Testimony

My Restoration Testimony

Today, we're sharing our first restoration testimony — by Brother Brandon Coppa. The goal of these testimonies is to feed our faith and praise God for the gift of the restored gospel.

When listening to testimonies from the saints you often hear the phrase, “born and raised in The Church.” I’m one of those who can lay claim to this phrase. I was given something many people search for their entire lives, and I completely took it for granted.

As a child and teen, I was active in church but never truly convicted. Once I left home for college, I began to question what I truly believed and if that included the Book of Mormon.

It's My Desire (1 Nephi 10)

It's My Desire (1 Nephi 10)

DESIRE – A strong feeling of wanting to have something that inspires actions to be taken to obtain the goal

After hearing his father Lehi’s wonderful vision (1 Nephi 8) and his other prophecies regarding the coming of the Messiah and the future of the House of Israel and the Gentiles (as summarized in chapter 10), Nephi “was desirous also that [he] might see, and hear, and know of these things.” Nephi’s desire for this was so strong that he was caught up by the Spirit of the Lord and was shown all of this and more (as recorded in chapters 11-14).

How strong is our desire for the things of God?

What's Your Mission Field?

What's Your Mission Field?

Although I’ve been involved in missionary work since the day I walked out of the waters of baptism — as taught to me by Brother Joe Calabrese — we often think of "missionary work" as going to a foreign land or going to another culture to share the restored gospel and Christ.

Both definitions are correct!

In some circumstances, it can be harder to share your testimony with a neighbor, work colleague, or family member than to travel thousands of miles and teach or preach about Jesus and salvation. Both are needed!

I Believe in Miracles

I Believe in Miracles

Today's Miracle Monday is a testimony of healing by Sister Theresa DeVincentis. If you are in need of a physical healing today, please take heart. All things are possible with God.

In January 2014, I had a blister on my heel, which turned into a diabetic ulcer. I had surgery to remove it, and my doctor said it touched the bone. After two weeks it became infected, and I had to immediately go to the hospital to be put on IV antibiotics. A culture of the infection diagnosed it as MRSA. I was anointed, and a few days later the doctor said it was infected, but that it wasn't MRSA. I was referred to a vascular surgeon to see if blood was flowing to my foot, which it wasn't. After they determined which vein was blocked, I had three surgeries to open the vein, clean out the infection, and insert a PICC line and wound vac to promote healing. I was scared and concerned that I may lose my foot.

Jesus, Our Superhero!

Jesus, Our Superhero!

In reflecting upon this past year’s teaching for our children in the Mesa Branch, AZ, I was reminded of our Vacation Bible School theme, which taught the kids about when Jesus was a kid. It was a powerful theme connecting some basic Bible points, such as Jesus

  • Had a Family
  • Had a Name
  • Went to Church

Many of the adults, including myself, played the role of various shopkeepers, and the kids paid a token to come to our "shop" and learn about events, customs, and daily life in Nazareth. We pretended that we didn’t know Jesus, and we asked the kids the question, “Who is Jesus, and why is everyone talking about Him?”
